Posture disorder causes many problems in the body

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şeyhmus Kaplan: Postural disorders are the source of many types of pain

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şeyhmus Kaplan, Head of the Department of Sports Medicine at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University Dursun Odabaşı Medical Center, stated that postural disorders caused by lifestyle and incorrect body positions are the underlying source of many types of pain in the body.

In his statement, Kaplan explained that lifestyle habits, exercising in incorrect positions, lifting objects improperly, and poor standing or sitting postures lead to postural problems.

He noted that neck, back, and lower back pain often stem from lifestyle factors, adding:

"Spending long hours sitting at a desk, staying in front of a computer, driving, or watching TV invites postural issues."

Kaplan emphasized that people who spend most of their day sitting with bent knees often develop problems that lead to postural deformities, and pointed out that more than 80% of people experience lower back pain at some point in their lives.

He stated that this condition, the second most common after headaches, is frequently seen between the ages of 30–50, and warned that poor posture does not develop overnight, nor can it be corrected with just a few days of exercise.

Kaplan added that most of the patients who visit hospitals due to pain are diagnosed with postural problems, and continued:

"This problem is frequently seen in women who wear high heels constantly for aesthetic reasons. As the center of gravity shifts, the body tries to adapt. If the incorrect posture continues, postural problems eventually develop.

When driving, we strain to look around more attentively. When watching TV or using the remote control, we constantly twist and lean forward to see better on a computer screen.

While using mobile phones—now a permanent part of our lives—we unintentionally adopt poor posture. Over time, our muscles and body adapt to these incorrect positions.

Some muscles are overloaded, while others are underused, which leads to muscular imbalances and, over time, deformations."

He also warned that some people confuse pain caused by postural issues with other medical conditions, saying:

"We often encounter patients who think they have migraines for years and go from doctor to doctor. When we give them postural correction exercises, their complaints that lasted for years often disappear.

These exercises must be done regularly. People must review their daily routines to identify what contributes to poor posture.

As posture improves, people will feel younger and more fit."
